Toronto FC announced today that the club has acquired winger Derrick Etienne Jr. in a trade with Atlanta United FC (Major League Soccer) in exchange for $200,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM). As part of the trade, Atlanta could also receive additional conditional $175,000 GAM if certain performance-based metrics are met. He will be added to the club’s roster pending his Canadian work permit, medicals, and receipt of the International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
Etienne joins Toronto FC after spending eight seasons in Major League Soccer representing four Eastern Conference clubs and lifting the Supporters’ Shield (New York Red Bulls, 2018), MLS Cup (Columbus Crew, 2020) and Campeones Cup (Columbus Crew, 2021).
The 27-year-old winger most recently featured for Atlanta United where he made a combined 27 appearances and recorded two assists for the Club through two seasons (2023, 2024) since joining in November 2022. Prior to the 5-Stripes, he recorded 12 goals and 14 assists in 90 combined appearances for Columbus Crew through three seasons (2020, 2021, 2022). The Richmond, Virginia native played an important role for the Crew, scoring against Seattle Sounders to help the club win the 2020 MLS Cup and starting in the club’s victory against Cruz Azul to lift the 2021 Campeones Cup.
Etienne originally signed a First Team contract as a Homegrown player with the New York Red Bulls on December 21, 2015, and made his MLS debut against D.C. United on September 11, 2016. With the Red Bulls, he scored six goals and recorded four assists through 79 combined appearances across four seasons (2016 – 2019). In 2018, he scored five goals during the MLS regular season to help the Red Bulls clinch the Supporters’ Shield, before making five appearances while on loan with FC Cincinnati during the 2019 MLS regular season.
At the international level, Etienne has earned 41 caps and registered eight goals and seven assists with the Haiti National Team since making his senior debut against French Guiana in a Caribbean Cup qualifier on November 10, 2016. Etienne also previously represented Les Grenadiers at the youth level, featuring at the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship in Panama and the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Jamaica.
