Toronto FC (0W-4L-4T, 4 points) were held to a goalless draw against Minnesota United FC (4W-1L-3T, 15 points) of the Western Conference at BMO Field on Saturday afternoon.
TFC Head Coach Robin Fraser enforced two changes from the side that started against Inter Miami CF last Sunday with Kevin Long and Derrick Etienne Jr. entering the fray for Nicksoen Gomis and Ola Brynhildsen who missed out through injury.
After an evenly contested goalless opening half, the Reds came out of the interval on the front foot in front of the home faithful. Minnesota United goalkeeper and Pickering, Ontario native Dayne St. Clair was on hand to deny efforts from Derrick Etienne Jr. and Federico Bernardeschi within the opening 12 minutes of the restart.
Down the other end, American shot-stopper Sean Johnson pulled off a crucial save from Nicolás Romero’s close-range attempt to keep the scores level at zero.
Looking to break the deadlock, Swiss midfielder Maxime Dominguez was introduced off the bench to get his first taste of BMO Field, after making his club debut on the road against Inter Miami CF last weekend.
Toronto FC came close to finding a late winner through Federico Bernardeschi and Jonathan Osorio in the closing stages, only to be denied by the Pickering, Ontario native Dayne St. Clair in Minnesota’s goal. The two sides settled for a point apiece upon the referee’s full-time whistle, with the Reds earning a result for the third consecutive MLS match.
Up next, the Reds hit the road for to visit the Western Conference’s Real Salt Lake on Saturday, April 19. Kick-off from America First Field in Sandy, Utah is set for 9:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
