AN ODE TO THE PAST
TFC welcome Minnesota United FC of the Western Conference for the fifth regular season encounter in the all-time series between the two clubs. Historically, Toronto FC hold a 2W-1L-1T record through their first four meetings with the Loons in regular season play. The Reds remain undefeated in two head-to-head matches played at BMO Field (2W-1T) to date and will be looking to record their first victory against Saturday’s visitors since a pair of braces from Alejandra Pozuelo and Jordan Hamilton lifted TFC to a dramatic 4-3 victory over Minnesota on April 19, 2019.
STEP BY STEP
The Reds enter Saturday’s matchup on the back of consecutive draws against the league’s respective Western and Eastern Conference leaders at the time. On March 29, TFC earned a point after a goalless draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps at BMO Field. American shot-shopper Sean Johnson recorded four saves to complete a Man of the Match performance on the cold and wet spring afternoon. The shutout, TFC’s first of the 2025 campaign, marked Johnson’s 16th clean sheet with the Reds, moving the Lilburn, Georgia native into joint-third, alongside Clint Irwin, on the club’s all-time clean sheet charts. Norwegian defender Sigurd Rosted also made his 50th MLS appearance for TFC on the same afternoon.
This past Sunday, Toronto FC and the reigning Supporters Shield’ winners Inter Miami CF played out an entertaining 1-1 draw in a Sunday Night Soccer matchup in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Reds struck first at Chase Stadium when Lorenzo Insigne set up Federico Bernardeschi in first-half stoppage time. Inter Miami responded instantly through a powerful left-footed finish from club captain and Landon reigning Donovan MLS MVP Lionel Messi before the half-time whistle. With both Eastern Conference clubs unable to find a game-winner in the second half, Toronto and Miami earned a point apiece, marking the Reds’ first road point against Inter Miami CF in club history. On the night, Sean Johnson recorded a season-high seven saves against Inter Miami CF. New signing Maxime Dominguez also made his TFC debut as a second-half substitute, becoming the fifth player to make his club debut during the 2025 Major League Soccer season following Markus Cimermancic, Theo Corbeanu, Zane Monlouis and Ola Brynhildsen.

TEAM OF THE MATCHDAY
Toronto FC’s Federico Bernardeschi was named to the Major League Soccer (MLS) Team of the Matchday for Matchday 7, as a starter, following his all-action performance in Sunday’s road draw against Inter Miami CF. Making a team-leading seventh start of the 2025 MLS season, Bernardeschi combined with Italian compatriot Lorenzo Insigne to open the scoring with a stunning goal in the closing minutes of the first half. On the play, Bernardeschi ran onto a pass from Insigne and weaved through defenders Jordi Alba and Gonzalo Luján in the box before firing an outside-of-the-boot finish past goalkeeper Drake Callender. The first-half strike earned a nomination for AT&T Goal of the Matchday for Matchday 7, with Bernardeschi’s effort subsequently finishing in second place with 25.3% of the vote. The Euro 2020 winner also recorded a team-leading shots (4), shots on target (2), key passes (3), ball actions (55) and sprints (17) on Sunday night. The honour marked Bernardeschi’s tenth MLS Team of the Matchday selection with Toronto FC and his first honour of the 2025 MLS season.
