Toronto FC (0W-4L-3T, 3 points) and the reigning Supporters Shield’ winners Inter Miami CF (4W-0L-2T, 14 points) played out an entertaining 1-1 draw in a Sunday Night Soccer matchup at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
TFC Head Coach Robin Fraser made four changes from the side that started in last weekend’s goalless draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Kosi Thompson, Deybi Flores, Theo Corbeanu and Ola Brynhildsen were inserted into the starting eleven in place of Henry Wingo, Alonso Coello, Derrick Etienne Jr. and Deandre Kerr.
Toronto FC came within inches of taking an early lead in an all-action first half of Sunday Night Soccer, only for winger Theo Corbeanu to be denied by the woodwork twice in the opening 20 minutes after getting himself into good postions in the box.
Down the other side, Inter Miami found the back of Toronto’s net twice themselves, only for Telasco Segovia and Lionel Messi to see each of their efforts ruled out for an offside and a foul in the build-up upon video review.
Toronto then struck first in the back-and-forth affair moments from the referee’s half-time whistle. On the play, Lorenzo Insigne played through his Italian compatriot Federico Bernardeschi who displayed silky footwork in the box before coolly finishing from close-range two minutes into first half stoppage time
The 47th minute goal marked Federico Bernardeschi’s second goal and Lorenzo Insigne’s second assist of the 2025 MLS campaign respectively.
Inter Miami CF found an instant response and equalized three minutes later when captain and reigning Landon Donovan MLS MVP Lionel Messi controlled Telasco Segovia’s pass and swept home with a powerful left-footed finish to level it at one.
Both sides were unable to capitalize on big goalscoring opportunities within 10 minutes of the second half. First, Federico Bernardeschi fired wide from close-range for TFC before Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez followed suit with a miss of his own for the hosts minutes later.
Tied at one, TFC captain Jonathan Osorio came close to giving his side a late lead with a well-struck left-footed volley in the 89th minute. The visitors continued to pile the pressure on the Herons, with Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender and the defensive rearguard on hand to deny Federico Bernardeschi and Toronto FC twice in the dying minutes.
Inter Miami also came close to finding a late go-ahead goal themselves through Fafa Picault but the Haitian international was unable to apply the finishing touch on Lionel Messi’s dangerous cross into the box on the last play of the night.
With both sides unable to find a late winner, the two Eastern Conference sides settled for a point apiece, marking the Reds’ first road point against Inter Miami CF in club history.
Toronto FC return home to host Minnesota United at BMO Field on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off from Toronto, Ontario is set for 2:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
