First Half:

Toronto FC’s first starting XI of the 2025 MLS campaign featured a blend of youth and experience, with new Head Coach Robin Fraser handing debuts to new signings, Theo Corbeanu and Markus Cimermancic, in the American capital.

The hosts got off to a fast start and struck first when Cameroonian midfielder Boris Enow capitalized to open the scoring for D.C. United in the eighth minute.

TFC responded with a well-worked goal of their own twenty minutes later. On the play, Henry Wingo’s low cross into the danger area was parried by goalkeeper Joon-Hung Kim onto Jonathan Osorio’s run, whose effort from close-range marked the club’s first goal under new Head Coach Robin Fraser.

With his appearance and 28th minute goal, Jonathan Osorio has now played and scored in each of his thirteen seasons with Toronto FC (2013 – 2025), extending all-time Toronto FC club records.

The Black-and-Red restored their lead when Jacob Murrell’s cross was headed home by reigning MLS Golden Boot winner Christian Benteke in the 35th minute, giving D.C. a 2-1 lead heading into the interval.

Second Half:

The Reds displayed grit and resilience after the break, pushing for another equalizer. The Reds’ persistence paid off when referee Sergii Boiko pointed to the penalty spot after former Red Brandon Servania fouled Richie Laryea in the box. Italian winger Federico Bernardeschi stepped up from 12 yards and cooly dispatched his penalty to open his account for the new season and level the score at two apiece in the 70th.

Despite both Eastern Conference clubs pushing for a late winner, the affair ended in a stalemate, with Robin Fraser and the Reds earning a valuable road point to begin the 2025 MLS season.
