AN ODE TO THE PAST

TFC host 2015 MLS expansion club New York City FC for the 23rd regular season encounter in the all-time series between the two clubs. Historically, TFC hold a 6W-9L-7T record through their first 22 meetings with the Boys in Blue in regular season play and the Reds remain unbeaten in postseason play after recording three MLS Cup Playoffs victories over NYCFC. The two Eastern Conference rivals have previously battled at BMO Field on ten separate occasions, with the Reds outscoring New York City 19 to 12 through five wins, three losses and two ties in Toronto. The Reds will be looking to record their first home victory against Saturday’s opponents since a debut goal from CJ Sapong gave TFC a 1-0 victory versus New York City FC on April 29, 2023.

STEP BY STEP

Toronto FC enter the Matchday 10 contest on a four-match unbeaten run dating back to March 29. The run began with a pair of draws against the league’s respective Western and Eastern Conference leaders (at the time) in the Vancouver Whitecaps and Inter Miami CF. First, TFC and the Whitecaps played out a goalless draw at BMO Field on March 29, before TFC and the reigning Supporters Shield’ winners Inter Miami CF battled to an entertaining 1-1 draw in a Sunday Night Soccer matchup in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on April 6, courtesy of first-half stoppage time strikes from Toronto’s Federico Bernardeschi and Miami’s Lionel Messi at Chase Stadium. A week later, Toronto FC and Minnesota United FC played out a goalless draw at BMO Field.

Last weekend, TFC picked up their first win of the 2025 MLS season with a hard-fought 1-0 road victory against Real Salt Lake at America First Field. TFC Academy product Theo Corbeanu’s ninth minute goal, his first for the club, stood as the game-winner on the night as the Reds recorded their third clean sheet of the season en route to three points in Sandy, Utah.

TEAM OF THE MATCHDAY

Toronto FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 9 as a starter following his standout performance and clean sheet in the club’s 1-0 road victory over Real Salt Lake. The veteran shot-stopper turned away all six of Real Salt Lake’s shots on target and his commanding presence at the back helped TFC secure their third clean sheet of the campaign. The Lilburn, Georgia native continues a productive start to his 15th MLS season, completing 31 saves through nine matches while recording three clean sheets and conceding only one goal in the club’s last four matches since March 29. The honour marks Johnson’s fifth MLS Team of the Matchday selection with TFC and the Reds have now earned two selections during the 2025 MLS regular season – Federico Bernardeschi (1) and Sean Johnson (1).

ONE PLANET

As part of Major League Soccer’s Greener Goals Week of Service, all clubs, including Toronto FC and New York City FC, will be wearing the 2025 One Planet Jersey this weekend as MLS celebrates Earth Week and continues its commitment to taking steps to address its environmental impact. Made with recycled materials, the adidas pre-match top celebrates taking a step towards carbon neutrality while raising awareness of climate transformation and the need to change human behaviour. Two distinct colourways, powder yellow and linen green, are inspired by the longevity of nature. Toronto FC’s 2025 One Planet Kit can be purchased at MLSstore.ca and Real Sports Apparel.

To date, Johnson has made 62 combined appearances for TFC and currently ranks third on the club’s all-time clean sheet charts with 18 in total. On the other side, El Salvador international Tomás Romero spent the 2023 MLS season with Toronto FC and recorded a total of 23 saves through six appearances for the Reds before joining the Boys in Blue in February 2024.
