Toronto FC (1W-5L-4T, 7 points) fell to a 1-0 loss against the visiting New York City FC (4W-4L-2T, 14 points) on a windy Saturday afternoon at BMO Field.
TFC Head Coach Robin Fraser made a pair of changes from last week’s side that started in the road win against Real Salt Lake with Maxime Dominguez and Charlie Sharp coming in for their first club starts in place of Lorenzo Insigne and Derrick Etienne Jr.
The Reds asserted themselves throughout the opening 45 minutes but were unable to find a first-half breakthrough, despite chances falling to Charlie Sharp and Theo Corbeanu on the windy spring afternoon.
New York City FC came within centimetres of opening the scoring nine minutes into the restart, only to see Hannes Wolf’s goal-bound effort acrobatically cleared off the goal-line by TFC’s Kosi Thompson.
Eight minutes later, NYCFC were awarded a penalty kick when Alonso MartÃnez was fouled in the penalty area by Kosi Thompson. The Costa Rican forward stepped up himself and converted the spot kick from 12 yards to give the visitors the one-goal lead in the 64th minute.
The hosts piled on the pressure in front of the home faithful for the remainder of the afternoon, with substitute Tyrese Spicer coming closest to levelling the scores with a pair of strikes in the closing stages.
However, despite the relentless push and pressure from Toronto, the Boys in Blue held firm defensively to ultimately ride out the storm and secure the narrow one-goal victory at BMO Field.
Up next, Toronto FC begin their hunt for domestic glory and host Canadian rivals CF Montréal in the 2025 TELUS Canadian Championship on Wednesday evening. The preliminary round match-up kicks off at 7:00 p.m. ET at BMO Field and will be broadcast on OneSoccer across Canada.
