Toronto FC II announced that the club has signed forward Alec Díaz to an MLS NEXT Pro contract. He will be added to the club’s roster pending league and federation approval.
“Alec will add quality to our front line as he is technically sound and reads the game very well with and without the ball,” said Toronto FC II Head Coach Gianni Cimini. “He poses a constant threat to the opponents’ backline with his movement in between as well as in behind defences and will be exciting to watch this season.”
Díaz, 20, spent the past four seasons with Tacoma Defiance, scoring 12 goals and adding five assists in 58 appearances for Seattle Sounders FC’s affiliate team. In 2020, the forward scored a team-high six goals and added two assists in 13 appearances, earning two United Soccer League (USL) Championship Team of the Week selections during the regular season (Week 4 and Week 7). Prior to joining Defiance, the forward scored 36 goals in 38 games across all competitions for the Seattle Sounders FC Academy in 2018, leading the U-17 squad to the U.S. Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) National Championship. He also scored the winning goal against New York Red Bulls Academy to claim the Generation adidas Cup Premier Division in the same season. Díaz originally joined the Seattle Sounders FC Academy via the Pacific Northwest Soccer Club in 2015.
Internationally, Díaz made his debut for Puerto Rico against Honduras on September 5, 2019 and has five caps with the senior national team. He also represented Puerto Rico at the 2020 CONCACAF U-20 Championship Qualifiers, where he started all three of the team’s games and scored two goals against Cayman Islands on February 19, 2020 in group stage play.
