Toronto FC II announced that the club has signed goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell to a USL contract. Patterson-Sewell, who played for TFC II in 2018 and 2019, will join the club’s roster pending league and federation approval. Patterson-Sewell will also assist Mike Munoz’s coaching staff for the team’s 2021 USL League One season.
“Caleb returns to the club in a unique role as a player-coach,” said Toronto FC II head coach Mike Munoz. “His veteran leadership will help our team and locker room. He will also be an important part of the technical staff as he looks to eventually transition into his coaching career."
Patterson-Sewell, 34, most recently served as Major League Soccer’s pool goalkeeper for the 2020 season. Prior to signing as the league’s emergency goalkeeper, he spent two seasons with Toronto FC II, appearing in 25 matches and recording five clean sheets during the team’s 2018 and 2019 seasons. In February 2018, Toronto FC signed Patterson-Sewell after acquiring his rights from New York Red Bulls in exchange for TFC’s fourth round pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft. He participated in the team’s pre-season camp in Los Angeles and travelled with the team to Mexico.
Patterson-Sewell has played in four countries (Australia, USA, Portugal and Canada) through a 16-year senior career. Among his accomplishments, he earned a Goalkeeper of the Year award nomination playing for Atlético Clube de Portugal during the 2011-2012 Liga de Honra season and set Jacksonville Armada’s clean sheet record (10) in 2017.
