Toronto FC announced that it has granted permission to goalkeeper Stefan Frei to train with English Premier League (EPL) club, Liverpool FC. Frei, who travelled to the United Kingdom earlier this week, has already started his training stint with the storied EPL club.

“This is a great opportunity for Stefan and we were happy to give him permission to train with a historic club like Liverpool,” said Toronto FC Head Coach and Technical Director Aron Winter. “He has emerged as one of the top keepers in the league since the start of his career and has certainly earned this special opportunity.”

Frei, 25, just completed his third season in Major League Soccer, all with Toronto FC, who drafted the Swiss keeper 13th overall in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft. This season, Frei made 27 league appearances earning six shutouts. He also appeared in all four of Toronto’s Nutrilite Canadian Championship matches, helping the club win its third straight national title.

Frei’s training period with Liverpool FC will conclude on Sunday December 18.
