Toronto FC announced Monday that the club has signed midfielder Victor Vázquez using Targeted Allocation Money. He will be added to the roster upon receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and his Canadian work permit.
“We are excited to bring Victor Vázquez to Toronto FC and provide our team with another experienced midfielder,” said Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “Victor developed in the Barcelona youth system which is recognized worldwide. He is a creative player with experience playing in an attacking midfield role but also centrally which gives us flexibility in our system. He will be a welcomed addition to our club.”
Vázquez, 30, most recently spent time with Liga MX club Cruz Azul where he made 23 appearances, scoring one goal with one assist after joining the club in December of 2015. Vázquez began his youth career at his hometown club, FC Barcelona (Barcelona) in 1997. Following his time in the youth system, Vázquez joined Barcelona C and eventually Barcelona B. He remained with Barcelona B for five seasons and was called into Pep Guardiola’s first team (Barcelona) on a number of occasions. He made his debut for Barcelona on April 12, 2008 as a substitute after three matches as an unused substitute. Vázquez also played in two UEFA Champions League group stage matches during the 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons, both times Barcelona went on to win the Champions League. Following his time at Barcelona, Vazquez signed with Belgian side, Club Brugge KV (Club Brugge) of the Jupiler Pro League. In five seasons with the Belgian club, he made 173 appearances, scoring 25 goals with 50 assists combined in all competitions. Amongst those appearances were 33 matches in Europa League Qualifiers and the Europa League, where he scored seven goals with four assists. He helped Club Brugge advance to the quarter-finals on the 2014-15 Europa League tournament. Vázquez’s time in Belgium was highlighted by being named the Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year for the 2014-15 season. That same year Club Brugge won the Belgian Cup and finished as runners up in the league. He was later sold to Cruz Azul following his time in Belgium.
