Toronto FC announced today the club has signed Canadian international defender Doneil Henry through 2022. He will be added to the roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) as well as the completion of a successful physical.
“Doneil has good experience in the league and can provide us with some backline depth,” said Toronto FC Head Coach and Sporting Director Bob Bradley. “He obviously has strong ties to Toronto and to the club and we know he’s excited to rejoin the team.”
Henry, 29, joins Toronto FC after spending the past six months with Los Angeles FC (LAFC), where he made six appearances. Before LAFC, Henry played for the Suwon Samsung Bluewings of the Korean K-League, where he appeared in 46 matches over two seasons (2020-2021). Henry spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons with the Vancouver Whitecaps, where he made 44 appearances (MLS regular season and Canadian Championship) and registered four goals. In 2015, Henry joined English Premier League club West Ham United, and later went on loan spells with Blackburn Rovers (2015/2016) of the English Championship and AC Horsens (2016) of the Danish Superliga, where he made a combined eight appearances. The Canadian started his lone first-team match for West Ham in the 2015-16 UEFA Europa League.
A native of Brampton, Ontario, Henry started his career in the Toronto FC Academy and became the first Homegrown player to sign with the First Team in 2010 as a 17-year-old, making his MLS debut against D.C. United on October 24, 2010. In five seasons with the Reds (2010-2014), Henry made a combined 93 appearances, scoring five goals. During his time with TFC, Henry won three consecutive Canadian Championship titles in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Internationally, Henry has earned 44 caps with the Canadian National Team (CMNT). He has represented Canada at the U-20 and U-23 level and in 2012 he was named Player of the Year for Canada’s U-20 squad.
