Toronto FC announced Thursday that the club has re-signed Canadian international midfielder Jonathan Osorio to a multi-year contract extension.
“This is a proud moment for our club to be able to secure Jonathan on a long-term deal that is fitting for one of the top Canadian players in the world,” said Toronto FC Sr. Vice-President, Soccer Operations & General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “It should be evident to everyone how important Oso is to TFC, not only on the field where he’s established himself as one of our team’s key players, but also off the field where he represents the city of Toronto as one of its own, a local kid who grew a TFC fan and fulfilled his dream of playing for the first team.”
Osorio, 26, is currently in his sixth season with Toronto FC and is the club’s all-time leader in matches played. He has made 202 appearances across all competitions with 33 goals and 27 assists. Osorio was a key member of the club’s Treble winning side last season, winning the MLS Cup, MLS Supporters’ Shield and the Canadian Championship. This season, Osorio has scored a career high nine goals in 23 MLS matches and 16 goals in 35 matches across all competitions. He earned the Golden Boot award and was named to the tournament’s Best XI during Toronto FC’s run to the 2018 Concacaf Champions League finals, scoring four goals in eight matches. Earlier this month, Osorio was named tournament MVP earning the George Gross Memorial Trophy as Toronto FC won its third consecutive Canadian Championship.
“It’s an amazing feeling to re-sign for the club that I love. This club and city mean everything to me and my family and for that reason I chose to stay and help bring more trophies and success to Toronto FC,” said Toronto FC midfielder Jonathan Osorio. “I want to help make Toronto FC recognized worldwide. It’s a big challenge but I know that I am up for it. I want to thank everyone at the club for helping to get this deal finalized.”
Osorio originally joined Toronto FC on March 1, 2013 after spending pre-season with the club. Prior to joining TFC, Osorio played for SC Toronto of the Canadian Soccer League and with Club Nacional de Football in Uruguay.
Osorio has earned 20 caps and scored two goals with three assists for the Canadian National team. His most recent cap came during a 1-0 friendly win over New Zealand on March 24.
