A second half free-kick goal by TFC II’sMo Babouli wasn’t enough to give Canada’s U-23 National Team the victory as they battled Cuba to a 2-2 draw on Tuesday.
Michael Petrasso had the other goal for the Canadians.
With the draw Canada was unable to secure second place in Group A of CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying (behind the United States) and will have to wait and see the outcome of the match between the States and Panama later in the same evening to see if they advance to the semifinals.
TFC II Captain Chris Mannella and Skylar Thomas were both in the Starting XI for Canada for the third straight match.
The Canadians had the opening goal of the night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Colorado as Michael Petrasso pounced on an erroneous back pass and tapped a side-footed volley past Cuba’s goalkeeper.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Cuba’s Arichel Hernandez tied it up following a three on two counter attack.
Canada Head Coach Benito Floro made one change at the halftime break, subbing on Babouli for Anthony Jackson-Hamel, a move that paid off seven minutes into the half.
Babouli curled a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box into the right corner that skipped off the hands of Cuba's goalkeeper and into the net.
It looked like Canada would close out the match with three points and a guaranteed spot in the semifinals but it wasn’t to be.
Cuba’s Hernandez notched his second goal of the match in the dying stages, catching Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau off his line and beating him with a high looping volley to deny Canada the victory.
UPDATE: Canada advanced to the semifinals following USA's 4-0 win over Panama. The Canadians will now play the winner of Wednesday's contest between Mexico and Honduras on Saturday. A lot is on the line on Saturday as a win in the semifinals would mean a spot in the 2016 Olympics.
