Sebastian Giovinco will join TFC before start of season

Toronto FC announced Monday that Italian international midfielder Sebastian Giovinco has reached an agreement with Italian Serie A side, Juventus to leave the club prior to the end of his contract allowing him to join Toronto FC. As per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.


"Having Sebastian join us in time for training camp is incredibly important for our team and our plans this ‎year. Sebastian is a world-class player who makes all of his teammates better and his arrival is a monumental moment for Major League Soccer and Toronto. Because he was so driven to join his new team now, Seba and his agent took it upon themselves and went to great lengths to negotiate his release from Juventus. That speaks volumes about his commitment to this team, the leadership he brings, and the fact that he is fully behind our vision for the long term,” said Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “We are grateful to Juventus and his agent Andrea D'Amico for working to allow Seba to pursue his Toronto FC and MLS dream now. We are also grateful for the extraordinary commitment demonstrated by the MLSE ownership. It is a huge credit to them, as well as Tim Leiweke, that their only focus this off season was on delivering a winner to TFC fans and the team is excited to begin working towards delivering on that goal on the pitch this week."


Giovinco, 28, departs Juventus, where he was in his sixth season. He made a combined 130 appearances, scoring 20 goals with 23 assists across Italian Serie A, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, Coppa Italia, and Supercoppa Italiana play. With Juventus, Giovinco won back-to-back Scudetto’s (Italian Serie A Champions) in 2012-13 and 2013-14, and back-to-back Supercoppa Italiana titles in 2012 and 2013.
