Toronto FC’s Richie Laryea has been named to the Major League Soccer (MLS) Team of the Matchday 28, as a starter, after scoring the game-winning goal against CF Montréal in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Stade Saputo.

Making his fourth MLS appearance of the 2024 season, Laryea was instrumental in the latest edition of the 401 derby and helped the Reds complete the 2024 MLS regular season double against rivals CF Montréal.

TFC made their first-half dominance count with an intricate and clinical sequence in the 38th minute. On the play, Federico Bernardeschi cut inside from the right flank to thread a through pass to Lorenzo Insigne, whose pass across the penalty area was converted by Richie Laryea after his well-timed run and first-time finish at the back post.

The goal, Laryea’s 12th for the Reds and his first since re-joining the club in February, proved to be the game-winner on the night and along with the team’s defensive solidity helped TFC return home from Québec with all three points.

The MLS Team of the Matchday selection marks the Canadian international’s first honour of the 2024 MLS campaign and the eleventh of his MLS career with the Reds.

In total, Toronto FC have now earned 17 MLS Team of the Matchday honours during the 2024 MLS regular season – Federico Bernardeschi (4), Sean Johnson (3), Lorenzo Insigne (3), Deybi Flores (2), Deandre Kerr (1), Richie Laryea (1), Kevin Long (1), Prince Owusu (1) and Tyrese Spicer (1).
