Toronto FC (10-15-3, 33 points) resume their Major League Soccer campaign and host 2021 MLS expansion club Austin FC (9-11-7, 34 points) at BMO Field on Saturday evening. The Matchday 32 encounter in Toronto, Ontario kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET and can be viewed globally on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app and on TSN 3/4 in Canada.
TFC will look to return to winning ways after restarting post-Leagues Cup 2024 with a pair of victories against Houston Dynamo and Forge FC before dropping a home result to D.C. United a fortnight ago. Austin FC edged the only meeting between the two clubs by a 1-0 scoreline in May 2023 and Saturday’s encounter will be the first between the Reds and Los Verdes to take place at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Toronto FC welcome Austin FC for the first and only MLS regular season meeting between the two clubs on Saturday evening. With six home wins in 2024, TFC hold a 121W-89L-77T all-time record (440 points) in MLS regular season matches played on home soil to date.
AN ODE TO THE PAST
Toronto FC host 2021 MLS expansion club Austin FC for the second encounter in the all-time series between the two clubs. In the only meeting between TFC and Austin FC to date, Los Verdes triumphed by a 1-0 scoreline against the Reds on May 20, 2023, courtesy of a late stoppage time winner from Gyasi Zardes at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas. Saturday’s match will be the first head-to-head encounter to take place at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario.
THE CLIMB CONTINUES
Toronto FC picked up a pair of victories upon restarting play in August following the 2024 Leagues Cup tournament. TFC marked the return of their MLS campaign with a 1-0 road win, courtesy of Prince Owusu’s game-winner, against Houston Dynamo FC at Shell Energy Stadium on August 24. The performance was the club’s first road victory against Houston Dynamo since September 2010 and the result also marked TFC’s first-ever victory at Shell Energy Stadium (formerly BBVA Compass Stadium) in Houston, Texas. Three nights later, TFC booked their ticket in the 2024 TELUS Canadian Championship Final after defeating Forge FC of the Canadian Premier League at BMO Field. Lorenzo Insigne’s 50thminute game-winning volley helped the hosts advance on away goals after the 1-0 victory and 2-2 aggregate scoreline. Most recently, TFC fell to a 1-3 loss against D.C. United in MLS regular season action on August 31 prior to the international break. On the night, Deandre Kerr’s 15th career goal for the Reds cancelled out MartÃn RodrÃguez’s 67thminute strike before late goals from Dominique Badji and Gabriel Pirani secured all three points for the Black-and-Red at BMO Field. TFC’s latest acquisition Henry Wingo started his first MLS match and registered his first assist for the club while Richie Laryea registered his first assist of the 2024 campaign and Lorenzo Insigne made his 50th MLS appearance for the Reds.
INTERNATIONAL ROUNDUP
Toronto FC welcome back three players who represented their countries on the international stage during the September FIFA window. Following a historic 2024 Copa América run in the summer, the Canadian Men’s National Team faced off against 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosts USA on September 7 and Mexico on September 10. TFC captain Jonathan Osorio (two appearances, 113 minutes) and Designated Player Richie Laryea (two appearances, 151 minutes) both contributed off the bench in the country’s 2-1 victory against the United States at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City before the pair started and helped Les Rouges record a goalless draw against Mexico at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. TFC midfielder Deybi Flores (two appearances, 180 minutes) was an ever-present for Honduras this window, as Los Catrachos defeated Trinidad & Tobago by a 4-0 scoreline before dropping a 1-2 result against Jamaica in Concacaf Nations League Group A action.
ONCE A RED
The Reds will come up against a familiar face in Austin FC’s Matt Hedges on Saturday evening. Hedges previously joined Toronto FC in December 2022 as a free agent after spending his entire professional career (2011 – 2022) with FC Dallas. Originally selected 11th overall in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, the American centre-back was named MLS Defender of the Year in 2016, selected to the MLS Best XI twice (2015, 2016) and was a three-time MLS All-Star (2017 – 2019) during his time with the Toros. In Toronto, Hedges made his club debut against D.C. United on February 25, 2023, and helped the Reds record five clean sheets through 14 MLS appearances before joining Austin FC via trade. Since joining Los Verdes in July 2023, Hedges has scored two goals through 24 appearances for Austin FC across all competitions
