AN ODE TO THE PAST

Toronto FC visit Canadian rivals CF Montréal for the 35th encounter in the all-time regular season series between the two clubs. Historically, TFC lead the head-to-head series with a 15W-14L-5T record through their first 34 meetings with the Bleu-blanc-noir in regular season play. The two clubs have previously faced off at Stade Saputo on 13 separate occasions, with the Reds outscoring Montréal 19 goals to 14, through seven wins, five losses and one tie at the soccer-specific stadium. CF Montréal have won the last three encounters at Stade Saputo and the Reds will be looking for their first MLS road victory at the stadium since a first-half strike from Pablo Piatti and a memorable late winner from Jozy Altidore powered the Reds to a 2-1 victory on September 9, 2020.

THE CLIMB CONTINUES

Toronto FC enter Matchday 28 action following a 3-1 road loss against Inter Miami CF on Wednesday evening. Following TFC’s bright start in Florida, the Herons took the lead against the run of play through Diego Gómez moments before half-time. Upon the restart, a quick-fire double from Federico Redondo in six second-half minutes then gave the hosts a three-goal advantage. TFC’s Derrick Etienne Jr. scored a consolation goal in the 80th minute from Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty’s set-up but the Reds were ultimately unable to complete the second-half comeback at Chase Stadium. Four nights earlier, Toronto FC produced their second come-from-behind victory of the campaign to defeat Philadelphia Union by a 2-1 scoreline at BMO Field. The Union took the lead through Tai Baribo’s 39th minute header before the Reds levelled through Jack Elliott’s 74th minute own goal. TFC completed the turnaround when substitutes Lorenzo Insigne and Deandre Kerr combined in the 78th minute, culminating with the Canadian forward scoring the game-winning goal to secure the 2-1 result on the night.

CERTIFIED ALL-STAR

On Monday, Toronto FC’s Federico Bernardeschi was one of 10 MLS players named to the roster set to compete against the LIGA MX All-Stars in the 2024 MLS All-Star Skills Challenge presented by AT&T in Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday, July 23. Bernardeschi will compete in three of the five entertaining challenges at Lower.com Field – the Shooting Challenge, the Touch Challenge and the Cross & Volley Challenge, and will be participating in the event for the first time. Earlier in the month, Bernardeschi was also one of 30 players selected to the 2024 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target to represent the MLS All-Stars against the best of LIGA MX on Wednesday, July 24. With his first MLS All-Star Game invitation, the Italian becomes the ninth Red to earn a selection, joining Ronnie O’Brien (2007), Jim Brennan (2008), Dwayne De Rosario (2009, 2010), Jermain Defoe (2014), Jozy Altidore (2015, 2017), Michael Bradley (2014, 2015, 2017), Sebastian Giovinco (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) and Alejandro Pozuelo (2019) on Toronto FC’s all-time All-Star list.

ONCE A RED

The Reds will come up against a familiar face and former Red in CF Montréal’s Raheem Edwards on Saturday evening. A product of the Toronto FC Academy, the Toronto, Ontario native signed with Toronto FC on March 2, 2017, and became the 14th player in club history to sign for the First Team from the TFC Academy. The Canadian winger made his club debut against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on June 29, 2016, in the Canadian Championship. Edwards scored one goal and registered six assists in 25 combined appearances (MLS regular season, MLS Cup Playoffs and Canadian Championship) in 2017, helping the Reds win the MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield and Canadian Championship and complete the domestic treble in a historic campaign. Following the trophy-laden season with TFC, Edwards spent time across MLS with Montréal Impact, Chicago Fire, Minnesota United, Los Angeles FC and LA Galaxy before re-joining CF Montréal in December 2023. This season, Edwards has registered four assists in 16 appearances (11 starts) for the Bleu-blanc-noir in MLS regular season play.
