AN ODE TO THE PAST

As part of MLS Rivalry Week, Toronto FC host Canadian rivals CF Montréal for the 34th regular season Canadian Classique in the all-time series between the two clubs. Historically, TFC hold a 14W-14L-5T record through their first 33 meetings with the Bleu-blanc-noir in regular season play. The two clubs have previously faced off at BMO Field on 15 separate occasions, with the Reds outscoring Montréal 25-23 through six wins, five losses and four ties in Toronto. CF Montréal are unbeaten in their last four regular season visits to Toronto (3W 1T) and the Reds will be looking for their first MLS home victory against Montréal since goals from Mark Delgado and Justin Morrow powered the Reds to a 2-1 win on August 24, 2019.

THE CLIMB CONTINUES

Toronto FC enter Saturday’s match eager to get back to winning ways after dropping consecutive MLS matches against New York City FC and Nashville SC in the last week. Short-handed with injuries and suspensions, TFC put on a valiant road effort against Nashville SC on Wednesday evening and were unable to hold on for a result, after conceding a pair of late goals in a 2-0 loss at GEODIS Park. Toronto FC II forward Charlie Sharp made his First Team debut as a substitute in the 76th minute, becoming the eighth player to make his club debut during the 2024 season. Aimé Mabika and Kosi Thompson made their first starts of the 2024 Major League Soccer season for Toronto FC. Prior to the pair of losses, the Reds had previously recorded a five-match win streak across all competitions, picking up victories against New England Revolution, Simcoe County Rovers, Orlando City, FC Dallas and CS Saint-Laurent, from April 20 to May 8 across MLS and Canadian Championship action.

ONCE A RED

The Reds will square off against a familiar face and former Red in CF Montréal’s Raheem Edwards on Saturday evening. A product of the Toronto FC Academy, the Toronto, Ontario native signed with Toronto FC on March 2, 2017, and became the 14th player in club history to sign for the First Team from the TFC Academy. The Canadian winger made his club debut against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on June 29, 2016, in the Canadian Championship. Edwards scored one goal and registered six assists in 25 combined appearances (MLS regular season, MLS Cup Playoffs and Canadian Championship) in 2017, helping the Reds win the MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield and Canadian Championship and complete the domestic treble in a historic campaign. Following his season with TFC, Edwards spent time across MLS with Montreal Impact, Chicago Fire, Minnesota United, Los Angeles FC and LA Galaxy before re-joining CF Montréal in December 2023.
