Reds Drop Final Preseason Contest To Union

Now the real games begin.

Toronto FC fell 1-0 to the Philadelphia Union in their final preseason game on Saturday at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, FL as part of the Tampa Bay Rowdies Suncoast Invitational.

Union forward C.J. Sapong capitalized on a TFC turnover in the 60th minute for the game’s only goal. The Reds had a handful of excellent scoring chances in the first half, only to be foiled by Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake. Sebastian Giovinco had TFC’s best chance in the second half, striking the post after beating two Union defenders in the 64th minute.

“A turnover within our last line was the difference,” said head coach Greg Vanney following the match. “We were more mobile and the ball moved quicker [in the second half], but it still needs to be better as we enter the season. I thought there were some signs in the second half of more life.”

The lineup that Vanney fielded to start the game against the Union will likely be the group that will start next Sunday in Harrison, NJ when Toronto faces the Red Bulls on opening day.

"No excuses for us, we'll be ready to go,: said Vanney. “As a group we need to be better than we were tonight.”

The Reds will return to Toronto on Sunday following their two week stay in Orlando.
