International Watch - Gold Cup Recap

Gold Cup Recap Split

The 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup is in the books. After three weeks of competition between the region’s top nations, a champion has been crowned with Toronto FC’s fingerprints all over the trophy.

Here’s a quick look at how it all went down for the Reds abroad:

Canada – Tosaint Ricketts, Jonathan Osorio and Raheem Edwards

The Canucks finished runners up in Group A, good enough for a berth into the knockout stage of the competition.

Edwards rejoined the Reds in Toronto following the group stages, while Ricketts and Osorio remained with their national side.

After a hard-fought battle, Canada were eliminated in the quarterfinals, dropping a 2-1 result to runners up Jamaica.

Ricketts and Osorio each made one appearance over the course of the tournament, logging 33 and 25 minutes, respectively.

United States – Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley and Justin Morrow

The Americans lifted the Gold Cup trophy for a sixth time, besting Jamaica 2-1 in the final.

The USMNT came out of the group stage unscathed topping Group B with seven points. Entering the knockout stages, head coach Bruce Arena called upon a handful of veterans to spur the team along, as the likes of Tim Howard and Clint Dempsey were called upon alongside Jozy Altidore and captain Michael Bradley.

The move paid dividends as Altidore bagged a world-class goal off a free kick for the opener in the final, while Bradley took home the Golden Ball as the tournament’s most valuable player. The captain did have a decided advantage heading into the tournament, however, as the sheer cuteness of this moment proved to be enough to spur Bradley on to the award.
