Frisco, Texas – The Toronto FC Academy U-17 team kicked off their 2018 Generation adidas Cup on Friday afternoon against German side Eintracht Frankfurt.
It was apparent from the warm-ups that the wind would play a major factor in the match. Winds in the area reach upwards of 40 km/h during play. Any balls played in the air were sent astray.
The Germans opened the scoring just 5 minutes in as Florian Zorn sent a blast past Spencer King. Eintracht scored a second goal just before the 20-minute mark as David Siebert found the back of the Reds’ goal after taking advantage of the wind holding up an aerial cross.
Head coach Benoit Cheyrou made a halftime adjustment switching from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2. The formation changed gave the reds a few better chances forward.
Mehdi Essoussi had one of the better opportunities on the afternoon for TFC as he streaked down the right and made his way into the box along the touchline, however, the Frankfurt keeper did well to rush out and make the stop.
Frankfurt added another just before the full-time whistle to take the opener by a final score of 3-0.
The Reds are back in action on Sunday as they take on D.C. United. Kickoff is set for 5:45 ET. You can follow the action on twitter @TFCAcademy.
