GA Cup Recap: U-17 vs. Estudiantes de La plata

GA Cup Game 3

Dallas – The U-17 Toronto FC Academy team pulled out an incredible comeback PK victory over Argentine side Estudiantes de La plata. Estudiantes came into the match with an unbeaten 1-1-0-0 record.

Estudiantes scored early and often. The Argentines were up 3-0 within the first 33 minutes. It stayed at the score into halftime.

However, the Reds put together a gutsy second half. Jordan Faria got the comeback started when he combined for a goal with Christopher Castillo early into the half. Castillo played a through ball for Faria to run onto, Faria cut across the top of the box from the left wing and curled in a golazo.

Substitute Luca Petrasso and Stefan Yeates combined for the second goal. Petrasso stole the ball from the Estudiantes player, played a quick ball for Jayden Nelson, who one-touched it to Kunle Dada-Luke, who played it back to Petrasso. Petrasso then slid the ball over to Yeates who slotted it home just to the right of the keeper.

In the 66th minute, the Reds were awarded a penalty. Jordan Faria stepped up and sent the ball in from the spot to complete the incredible comeback.

However, just seconds later Estudiantes were awarded a penalty. Keeper Sebastian Sgarbossa would come up with a massive kick save to keep the score level. It would remain level after the full 70 minutes of play.

As per GA Cup rules, all draws are decided via PK, with the winning team earning two points and the losers one.

After Zakaria Abdi, Faria, Terique Mohammed, and Yeates converted, Sgarbossa stopped Estudiantes on their fifth attempt. Petrasso stepped up with a chance to win it for the Reds and made no mistake as he fired it home to earn the Reds the extra point.

That concludes the group stage for the 2017 GA Cup. The team will now play a pair of friendlies against other GA Cup teams before heading home on Sunday.
