Toronto FC dropped their season opener at Audi Field, conceding two late goals to D.C. United in a 3-2 final.
The Reds fell behind early after Mateusz Klich opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a blazing shot from outside the box.
The second half saw a resurgent TFC side fight back in a big way, battling their way back into the tie.
Federico Bernardeschi tied the match in the 66th minute, cooly converting the penalty kick that was earned by Richie Laryea.
The Italian international played a big role in the go-ahead goal as well, striking a free kick on net that was parried into the path of Mark-Anthony Kaye who buried the rebound from close range in the 83rd minute.
The joy was short-lived, however, as the hosts found the equalizer through Christian Benteke in the 90th minute before a last-gasp winner from Theodore Ku-Dipietro secured all three points for D.C.
TFC returns to action on Saturday, March 4 against Atlanta United FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
