That’s how far Toronto FC traveled during their eight-game road trip to begin the 2016 season. They came across highs and lows during their travels. A resounding 2-0 win on opening day against the Supporters’ Shield holders and a derby win over Montreal was matched by red card heartbreak in Colorado and a controversial officiating decision in Kansas City.
11 points through eight games is where the Reds stand heading into their home opener this Saturday at BMO Field against FC Dallas [7:30 PM ET | TSN 4 | TSN 1050].
It’s a good haul for a team that has been in every game they’ve played, according to head coach Greg Vanney.
“It was a good trip for us,” said Vanney at the KIA Training Ground on Tuesday. “We set out this season to solidify ourselves defensively. I think we were successful in that way.”
It’s true. The Reds emerged from their eight-game journey across North America with only seven goals against, the best total in MLS. With four home games in a row on the horizon, TFC is looking to get on the front foot early against the opposition.
“We want to try and get ahead in these home games and force teams to chase us,” Vanney stated. “We’re going to have to continue to grow as a team, in terms of creating chances. That’s something we can continue to get better at.”
The squad is charged up to play in front of a packed BMO Field for the first time this season.
"We're excited to be back home in front of our fans at BMO Field,” said right back Steven Beitashour. "With the renovations and playing under the lights it's going to be amazing. I can't wait to be on the field.”
“I'm excited to get out there and see a full stadium on Saturday night,” added Justin Morrow.
The Reds received good news on the injury front as Vanney is optimistic Jonathan Osorio can play this weekend after missing out on Sunday’s match against the Timbers with an ankle injury.
FC Dallas is unbeaten at home but they’ve had troubles away from Toyota Stadium. They’ve lost in Vancouver and New York by a combined score of 7-0 in their last two outings. The Reds will hope to add to their road blues on Saturday night at BMO Field.
