Toronto FC defeated expansion side Minnesota United FC in a preseason friendly on Wednesday afternoon. Both teams battled through harsh rain and slick conditions throughout the match, but it was the Reds who scored three times to hand the Loons their first defeat of the preseason. The Reds sent out a starting XI that consisted of seven starters from the MLS Cup Final.
The Reds struck first courtesy of an absolutely beautiful goal from Sebastian Giovinco. Armando Cooper played the ball into Giovinco in the centre of midfield. The 2015 Golden Boot winner took a few touches before making a great cut around a helpless Minnesota defender. Giovinco then sent in an absolute rocket of a left-footed shot that sailed right into the top corner.
The Atomic Ant doubled the lead after finishing off a perfect cross from defender Justin Morrow, who was sent streaking down the wing by Jozy Altidore.
The Reds made wholesale changes to start the second half. Midfielder Victor Vazquez got into his first game action for TFC. The Spaniard played 30 minutes before coming off as a substitute for Jay Chapman.
Jordan Hamilton added another goal for the Reds early in the second half. The Scarborough native was sent through on a great ball from Benoit Cheyrou. Hamilton made no mistake as he danced past the onrushing keeper to slot home the third goal for the Reds.
Toronto FC will finish their preseason campaign this Saturday when they take on the Chicago Fire in the SunCoast Classic. Stay tuned for stream information.
